Averaging pitot tube — flanged insertion assembly

BETFLOW Averaging Pitot Tube (BF-AP)

Averaging Pitot Tubes are used for flow measurement in pipelines & ducts for gas, liquid & vapour applications. It operates on the principle of differential pressure which is generated by a restriction that causes an increase in fluid velocity. The sensing ports inside the internal averaging tube connected to the pressure-sensing device provides an average of pressures measured from different ports. The readings for the low pressure side are obtained using similar sensing ports connected to a pressure sensor which can be a transducer or transmitter. The output reading on the transmitter is the variation in the pressure values at different points along the length of the tube.

Bhavyam offers all flow elements under the BETFLOW range of products. Design & Engineering done as per Global Standards to meet challenging process demands. Manufacturing all flow metering solutions as per ISO 5167/ ASME MFC 3M/ BS 1042/ AGA 3/ AGA 8/ RW Miller standards.

Applications we serve.

  • Large-diameter pipelines where flanged DP elements are impractical or costly
  • Retrofitting flow measurement into existing lines via hot-tap installation
  • Compressed air, natural gas, and steam flow measurement
  • HVAC ducting and large ventilation system flow monitoring
  • Cooling water and large-bore liquid pipelines
  • Flare gas and plant utility flow monitoring where low pressure loss is required
  • Applications needing flow measurement without a full pipeline shutdown

Frequently asked questions.

What is the main advantage of an averaging pitot tube over an orifice plate?

An averaging pitot tube causes very low permanent pressure loss compared with an orifice plate, since it occupies only a small fraction of the pipe cross-section. It is also significantly lighter and lower in cost for large line sizes, and can often be installed via hot tap without shutting down the process.

Can an averaging pitot tube be installed without stopping the process?

Yes, in many cases. Using a hot-tap fitting and an insertion/retraction mechanism, the pitot tube can be installed or removed while the line remains in service, which is a key advantage for large pipelines where a shutdown is costly.

What information is needed to size an averaging pitot tube?

We need the fluid type and phase, flow rate (minimum, normal, maximum), operating pressure and temperature, the exact pipe internal diameter and material, and whether hot-tap installation is required, so the probe length, sensing port arrangement, and mounting are specified correctly.
