Frequently asked questions.

What is a venturi tube and how does it achieve high accuracy with low pressure loss?

A venturi tube is a DP flow element with a gradually converging inlet, a cylindrical throat, and a gradually diverging outlet. The smooth, gradual change in cross-section reduces turbulence and energy loss compared with an orifice plate, while still producing a precise, predictable pressure drop for flow calculation, resulting in high accuracy with a low permanent pressure loss.

When should a venturi tube be chosen over an orifice plate?

A venturi tube is preferred when a lower permanent pressure loss is important, such as in high-flow or energy-sensitive applications, or when higher accuracy is required for custody transfer or fiscal metering. It is also better suited to liquids with a moderate solids content, since its smooth internal profile is less prone to fouling than a sharp-edged orifice plate.

What straight pipe length does a venturi tube require?

Venturi tubes generally require shorter upstream straight lengths than orifice plates for a given beta ratio, as specified in ISO 5167. The exact requirement depends on the beta ratio and the type of upstream fitting.
